My-diary.org is an online diary service providing free personal diaries and journals for general use, both private and public. It gained popularity for its anonymity feature, allowing users to share only what they choose. 

The creator of the website, Christian, did not research competitors and instead focused on user feedback for feature development. To his own surprise, the website became popular with thousands of loyal users all over the world. 

The Challenge: Upgrading to a more advanced monetization solution without risk 

Before switching to Setupad, my-diary.org used Google Adsense with two ad slots on the front page. The site was not optimized for ads, and Adsense’s auto ads feature was primarily utilized.

The process begins with analyzing the website’s historical monetization and traffic data to calculate a guaranteed daily revenue figure. If we exceed the guaranteed amount, we will pay the higher amount.

The Solution: Guaranteed revenue and custom approach  

To calculate the guaranteed revenue, we looked at the average results from the last year and the last 3 months. We added 10% as our guaranteed revenue promise. Nevertheless, the results exceeded the guaranteed revenue amount by 5% in the first month and by 10% in the second month.

For example, we replaced a 160×600 vertical sidebar on the homepage with a repeatable lazy-loaded 200×200 rectangle. 

For better viewability and results, we added top-performing formats, such as large top billboard banner, interstitial, instream video player, anchor ad, side rails, and others.

It’s important to note that my-diary.org is an SPA (Single-page application). Perhaps the biggest advantage of these pages is that they load much faster after the initial download. However, ad load initialization in SPAs differs from traditional multi-page websites due to the way SPAs handle navigation and content loading. 

In a traditional website, navigating to a new URL typically involves a full page reload, which naturally reinitializes all scripts, including ad scripts. However, in a SPA, navigation between different “pages” or views usually doesn’t involve a full page reload. Instead, content is dynamically loaded, and the URL is updated using JavaScript, often through frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue.js. This approach requires a different strategy for ad load initialization, which was successfully implemented by Setupad’s AdOps Trafficker Sabīne Žilde.

We also emphasized to the client that to effectively monetize his European and US traffic, the website must have a Consent Management Platform (CMP) in place.
